I'm a huge Steve Earle fan, and also an admirer of Townes Van Zandt. Townes was a great songwriter, one of our finest, but I also enjoy hearing other artists cover his songs. Most fans are aware of the profound influence that Townes Van Zandt had on Steve Earle and his music, so this album is obviously a labor of love for Steve, performing songs by Townes that mean a lot to him. Nothing shabby about this project at all, but still I didn't feel overwhelmed by it all, wanting to love this album more than I did. What's missing? Honestly, I'm at a loss to explain that missing intangible, but I just feel that this album misses the standard of greatness. Good versions, but nothing really spine-tingling. But that's okay, I can live with what's on here; very good is still better than mediocre or poor.
