I am not really a fan of the Houston Rockets or the Boston Celtics but I do enjoy watching the 80's NBA so it was fun to watch this Finals series from 1986 between the Rockets and Celtics. Back then there were a lot less technical fouls being called and players were allowed play. Another thing I noticed was that players from opposing teams didn't mind helping each other up off the floor(don't see much of that today).
This set contains all six games each on its own disc. The whole set is contained in one larger size DVD case(which I like as opposed to having a DVD case for each disc which seems excessive) and each disc is easily accessible. The one big flaw for this set of course is that the fight scene is cut out from game 5. Other than that this is a great set for fans of 80's style basketball.
A terrific (!!!) set/gift for Boston Celtics fans/lovers (mind U, I was rooting for the 'Motor City Bad Boyz' back then!)of one of the truly Great NBA & Celtic teams of all-time. All you loudmouth, die-hard Bulls-fans need to step aside or watch objectively at REAL team-work & unselfish, flawless execution of the half-court offense with crisp passing & patience whose strength lay in an immobile front line...something that NEVER existed in Chicago during the 90's! A pleasure to watch one of the game's truly great clutch performers & all-around players in Larry Bird who put the team first ahead of himself in contrast to Michael Jordan whose self-centered ego & superiority complex puts him in a different category. But that's a discussion for another page/blog. The only flaw this set has, unfortunately, is the edit of the 'Ralph Sampson cheapshot/fight with Sichting'(Gm5),a deliberate ploy by the manifacturers & Co's involved to conform to PC standards! To give a better example of the continuity of the Celtics (80's)legacy, perhaps they should have included those CLASSIC Gm7s the Celtics played/hosted/won in this package: 84 vs Knicks & Lakers, 87 vs Bucks & Pistons, 88 vs Hawks) Still, this is a real entertaining package of games, high quality from the CBS Network MASTERs tapes.
Whether you are a Celtics fan or not, this is high quality basketball and a must for any lover of the game or fledgling player who wants to learn more about how the game can be played. See a young 7 foot Hakeem Olajuwon just starting to flex his muscles as part of the fearful twin towers (Ralph Sampson 7'4") See the renown Celtic best front court ever and ball movement - the D in this series is also brilliant (twin towers!!!) And, above all else... Watch this to witness the greatness that is Larry Bird.
Having just finished Bill Simmons "Book of Basketball", I knew that I had to have the DVD set of the 1986 NBA finals. As a lifelong Celtic fan and especially Larry Bird, I knew it would be great. The format of the game only video (no commercials) is just the way most of us use our DVR's with regular programming. FANtastic video and of course the Celtics win!
7 Discs. The main disc is the recap of the Celtics 85-86 season, playoffs and championship run. The other 6 discs each contain 1 game from the Rockets vs. Celtics 1986 NBA Finals. If you can't get enough of Bird/McHale/Parish/DJ/Danny/Walton/Sichting or mid 80's NBA - some of the best years of the league - than this is a perfect addition to your collection.
