Works great--when it is working
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018
I paid $130 for this sharpener in 2013. It worked pretty well in my middle school science and engineering classroom, getting daily use for four years. When it is working, it is extremely fast (and quite loud) and it puts a fine point on all kinds and sizes of pencil.
My understanding is that using it for colored pencils, while feasible, voids the warranty. Also, if it is used to sharpen a pencil with a decorative plastic wrapper, the wrapper will clog the cutting blades and you'll have to take the housing off to get access to unclog it.
After a couple of years, the internal safety lever broke and I had to fix it with a bolt and nut. I also had to use rubber bands to keep the shavings receptacle tight against the body housing, since it tended to slip out a few mm, and then the sharpener wouldn't activate due to the internal safety mechanism.
Just last week the motor seems to have given out. The internal gears are plastic (which is a huge flaw in a sharpener that has a regular retail price of ~$200) and I was worried they'd stripped, but they appear to be fine. However the sharpener just hums and will not spin.
If the company does in fact warranty this sharpener, I will update and leave a five-star rating. If not, I'd say this is a pretty decent choice for the current price of ~$50, and I'd consider buying a second unit at that price. I certainly would not pay again what I originally did, if the company doesn't honor their warranty offer.
