This greatest hits compilation or singles of Depeche Mode is ruined by a sound quality that makes it hard to listen to. The engineering is lacking in this recording. I understand that in the 80's treble was at its peak in popularity as lot of music tended towards the trebly sound. But the sound on this collection is downright atrocious. It sounds as if they engineers simply threw these tracks together without doing proper remastering. The other singles collection does not suffer from the volume level that this one has. The sound comes off as over driven and lacks a rich sound. As it is, this treatment of Depeche Mode's earlier works is not worthy of a fan's collection. By the way, I used a higher end stereo equipment to listen to this album and even that could not mask this album's sonic shortcomings. If you are looking for a greatest hits or singles collection of Depeche Mode's earlier works, this is definitely not it. I recommend either getting the earlier albums themselves or one of those boxed sets.
Don't misinterpret this review. Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands, and these songs are absolutely awesome. However, the mastering on this CD is atrocious. ALL the songs are compressed and clipped, ruining the dynamics of each song. If you take a look at the waveforms of the tracks, you'll see what I mean. It sounds TOO loud and distorted.
Do yourself a favor and find yourself the earlier Singles: 81-85 compilation or Catching Up with Depeche Mode if you live in the States ( although you'll be missing Get the Balance Right, People Are People, and Leave in Silence, but those can be found on the People Are People compilation album ).
This also goes for the mastering on the 86-98 compilation.
