If you don't know the history of Cinema then I guess this could be the best year ever

However well written the book may be and whatever his taste might be in movies anyone who knows anything about the cinema and who loves it could not with a straight face say that 1999 was the best year ever. Forget about 1939 with the Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Ninotchka, Dark Victory, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Women, I could go on and on and that's just 1939. How about 1942 Casablanca, Bambi, Mrs. Miniver, To be or not to be, The Magnificent Ambersons, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Woman of the year . . . How about 1944 Double indemnity, Laura, Arsenic and Old Lace, Lifeboat, Mr. Skeffington, Jane Eyre, Since You Went Away, Etc. You want something a little later how about 1967 The Graduate, Bonnie and Clyde, In the Heat of the Night, Cool Hand Luke, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner The Dirty Dozen, In Cold Blood, Wait until dark, Barefoot in the Park, Two for the road, Far from the Madding Crowd, To Sir with Love, The Taming of the Shrew, James Joyce's Ulysses, Elvira Madigan, Bob Dylan don't look back. How about 1969? Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, True Grit, the Wild Bunch, They Shoot Horses Don't They, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Alice's Restaurant, Medium cool, Anne of a thousand days, goodbye Columbus, Z-- if you're including any foreign movies. . . , Women in love, Sterile cuckoo Fellini's Satyricon, can't help adding foreign films I'll try and refrain. Putney Swope, Tell them Willie Boy is here. I can't possibly go through every year that blows 1999 out of the water. It seems like if you were born in 1979 and didn't look back maybe you could make a case for 1999. But otherwise you'd have to be wearing blinders. . . 1959 Some Like It Hot, then her, North by Northwest, Anatomy of a Murder, pillow talk, the nuns story, room at the top, The Diary of Anne Frank, On the beach . . . And I have really restrained myself from putting in any non American-made movies like Hiroshima mon amour. How about 1982; Blade Runner, e t, Tootsie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Sophie's Choice, the verdict, 48 hours, Gandhi, Victor Victoria, Diner, Personal best, My Favorite Year, shoot the Moon. Even a mediocre year like 1977 competes well with 1999 with movies like Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever, Eraserhead, the Goodbye Girl, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, The last wave, Julia, The turning point. I could write my own book about how 1999 is in no way the best year in cinema ever.
