August 1st: I just finished "Start Writing Your Book Today" and really am starting my book today! Thanks to Morgan Gist MacDonald's directions I now have a deadline, daily word count goal and even have a friend who will be holding me accountable (using the sheets provided by the author). Hope to respond to this review soon with my first draft completed!
August 15th Update:I am now half way through my manuscript--way ahead of schedule, and should be finished with my first book by mid-September. I am following Morgan's advice to the letter and it's crazy how helpful it is. Can't wait to update with a finished product!
August 24th Update: Finished my first draft! Onward to the editing phase, but I am very confident ill be finishing everything up in the next few months.
If you are aspiring to write, but just don't know how--do not hesitate and get this book. I never thought this day would come, but thanks to Morgan's advice and book I have a completed rough draft manuscript!
Normally I'm skeptical about how-to books because the authors talk like cheerleaders: high on the motivation, but with little to no specifics on how to overcome the challenges along the way. I was very pleasantly surprised with this book.
There are a lot of prospective authors, but most end up getting daunted by aiming too high, and lose interest when the whole book-writing process doesn't quite pan out as easily as they think it should. This author talks about the different options now available to prospective book authors: Instead of writing a full-length book, they can set aside a few weeks to write a short book, and use that to test their market through electronic distribution. From there, they can build up confidence and knowledge about their market, and work their way up. Why set yourself up for a fall, when there are other good options available which may bring you closer to your goal of becoming a published author?
In the book, she also reveals some of her "tricks of the trade" which may come in handy for prospective authors. I am a sucker for this kind of information since I like to learn trade secrets for how people go about doing their work. These are not complicated tricks, but are things you can put into action for yourself in an afternoon. Not complicated, and very handy to know.
This author also works as a freelance editor for prospective authors, and she is very upfront about how this book helps her to discover prospects for her own editing business. I came away convinced that she knows what she is doing.
This is a small solid book, and should be on your tablet if you are serious about becoming an author.
If you are like me and have been wanting to write a book for quite a while but you have been dragging your fee this is the book for you. Morgan has done a terrific job inspiring would be authors to take action.

I took an online workshop from Morgan a few weeks ago. Without that, this book may not have been as inspiring for me. She takes a very different approach to completing a manuscript than I have in the past. The changes I've made from her guidance have made me feel way more confident and re-energized about completing my book. I appreciate how she makes the process of completing a manuscript manageable, and busts the myth that only a "chosen few" can get it done. If you read this book, I highly recommend you also check out PaperRaven Books online community for further explanation and support.
Morgan’s book, “Start Writing Your Book Today” is just what I need at this time. I’m a beginner writer who has a desire to write and ideas to share. Morgan gives direct answers to those questions that every writer struggles with and she gives us all reasons to continue our dream. In a friendly and charming way, she offers advice and experiences from having “been there and done it”.
After first watching the many YouTube and Periscopes that she has so graciously given, I started reading her blog and although the information is valuable enough to be watched over and over, it is her book that puts the information into an easy to learn format.
“Start Writing Your Book Today” will empower the writer by telling the truth. It will tell you that writing is hard work, but that if your desire is strong enough, and if you follow Morgan’s directions, you can publish a book of your own. The book will lead you from chapter one’s “What it really takes to be a successful author” to chapter seven’s “Finished manuscript”.
When I’m a bit further down the road with my story, I hope to use her editorial services because Morgan has become my teacher. I only hope that she will be able to fit me in once this book becomes more popular!
I have written several children's books combining stories and sign language, but as I venture towards writing for adults I need the advice that Morgan provides. My children's books are at Randall Clarkson
I can’t recommend "Start Writing Your Book Today" more. As I proceed from writing idea to publish I will be constantly referring back to Morgan’s book. Yes, I will be continuing to follow her on Periscope and YouTube and I can’t wait for her next book.
I have followed Morgan and her work supporting writers at Paper Raven Books for a few years now. She is the real deal, and this new book shares a blueprint for moving from a dream of writing a book to getting it done. It is practical, concrete--really a "do this, it works" formula--that inspires confidence while offering real structure. Her voice also comes through so clearly--the tone is supportive, candid, and passionate, b/c Morgan is on this earth to help writers give birth to their dreams of writing a book. Having made inconsistent (but real) progress for a couple of years on my book, I needed a kickstart, and this book is just the perfect lasting framework I needed as I enter 2019. Definitely encourage others to get this book and to visit her at paperravenbooks.com where she offers additional fabulous resources.
This book absolutely lives up to it’s title. There are practical exercises in this book very early on that can be implemented immediately and have you working on your book with no more delays and excuses. However, it doesn’t stop there. There are also practical suggestions and advice that can guide you from writing the first word of your book to the very last.
The length is fantastic. I read through it I one sitting and I loved that it was thorough but concise. Reading about writing is great, but the only way to get a book published is to sit down and write!!
Anyone that is struggling with starting a book should read this. I know that I will be referring back to this book many times as I continue my own writing journey
