My inclination is to use this for in home network Ethernet protection and a more beefy device for any POE needs. see less

It can be installed at any point to protect the network, i have mine between the modem and switch, and the earth wire is connected to an electrical plug which is plugged into the UPS

It shouldnt impact download or upload speeds. Its only earthen any current that may come through due to lightnings, etc.
