I haven't tried the noise cancelling on a flight or subway but when I have noise cancelling on without playing music I can still hear outside noises..for example I have it on now and I can hear my dog barking in the other room and I can hear my TV that's playing in the same room I'm in but the volume isn't very loud.

Other thing I noticed was after getting off the train, I walk just over a mile to the office, you can hear every step (with the NC on), with it off, it was fine. With NC on, I still had to increase volume to 85-90%. My old bose earbuds (I know I know completely different), were amazing. I wanted to try a different product but this just doesn't work well. I'm going to return these. That being said, overall sound quality is good but for me the NC just isn't good; maybe I got a defective pair. see less Just got these yesterday. Admittedly these are my first pair of noise cancelling headphones, but they work awesome on airplanes. Even if you don't have any audio playing, the engine and wind noise almost completely disappears when you turn the switch to noise cancelling. With my last pair of headphones, I had to turn the volume on my phone all the way up to be able to watch movies on the plane; with these guys I can watch a movie at 40% volume or less. I flew across country with my wife about a month ago, let her use these headphones for 5 minutes, and we bought a second pair the moment we landed.

It is great! Decent sound, pretty good noise cancelling. I often use it in airplane travel. The noise reduction effect leaves a very good impression on me so that I can rest quietly. I have been using it for a couple of weeks. It blocks out ambient noises no matter when you are on noisy subway or in crowds. So far so good, it is just what I need.
