Yes! However, as of now there are two versions of the Apple pencil. The 1st gen (supported by this iPad) is charged using the lightning connector under the cap of the pencil. The 2nd gen (NOT supported by this iPad) is charged using a magnetic connector on the flat side of the pencil.
You most definitely can use the Apple Pencil with this version of the iPad. It does not need to be an iPad Pro.
I think we can only use old version of the Apple pencil. The new pencil only supports the new ipad pro because it only charges with the magnets present on the sides of the new ipad pro.
The apple pencil first generation works with this ipad. The second generation apple pencil doesn't
Yes. I use the (first gen) Apple Pen to mark up PDFs in Adobe Reader on this iPad. Does not work with earlier iPads (or so I'm told).
You can use the first gen apple pencil with this iPad or you can use the Logitech crayon stylus as well with this (it's half the price)

I purchased the Apple Ipens X1 which I thought was the earlier version of the Apple Pencil but so far I cannot get it to work with this IPad. Suggestions?
