5 stars with reservations. BUYER BEWARE. I ordered the MP3 version of this album (October 2016). I am a long-time fan of Yo-Yo Ma. As for Ennio Morricone, I was a fan long before I knew his name. Two of the selections from the soundtrack to The Mission were included in another collection I have and I fell in love with the haunting melodies. I went searching for more and found this album. What a find – 2 great artists collaborating on an album that, like other reviewers, reduced me to tears in places because of the sheer beauty and imagination of the music. However…several of the numbers cut off abruptly and even in mid-note. Other reviewers made the same comment from as long ago as 9 years and obviously no one has bothered to fix the problem. The music alone is so worthwhile, but only if you are willing to bear the aggravation and frustration in the present format.
Most of my favorite music originated in the 1700s to early 1800s. That is all changed now because this CD will enter your mind and profoundly move you to a higher plane. It is perhaps the most beautiful music I have ever experienced. The collaboration that produced this wonderful music was meant to be. Do not wait make this music your own to enjoy when your soul needs nourishment.
The music is wonderful. The track editing (I purchased the mp3) are divided horribly. Some of the tracks... particularly track 2... cut off the start of the music. 5 Stars to Yo-yo and Ennio. 1 Star to whoever or whatever divided these tracks.
I'm so glad that I found this album. It is possibly the most beautiful musical work that I have in my collection. Perfect for easy, quiet listening enjoyment and equally perfect as background, ambient music.
So how do I personally rate a musical piece of work? Very simple...am I touched or moved by what I just heard? With this album, the answer is a resounding YES! Ennio's music is breathtaking. The arrangements and the playing of Yo Yo Ma is second to none. What a combination. This is the type of album you just want to play by putting on your headphones and shutting out the world. Just sit back and get lost in the music. It is quite a beautiful and emotional ride. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND STUNNING.
Film composers don't do it like this any more. No one tops Morricone for memorable, heart-rending melodies and super lush orchestrations. Adding Yo-Yo Ma to the mix just makes it even more wonderful. Their choice of tracks for this project are spot on and extremely satisfying. I'll be listening to this one over and over again.
