I hesitated before choosing this recording instead of the Casals; since I am in no way a music expert I decided that the superior recording techniques of the Yo-Yo Ma mattered more than the undoubted artistry of Casals. I wasn't disappointed; in fact, this CD is on my player right now. There is something about Bach's music that takes me to a different place when all the other media I bombard myself with just fall short. I have about 12 hours of his keyboard music that I listen to regularly and I thought that the cello would make a nice change. I was right. Such a full, rich sound. It seems to my (totally uneducated) ear that the cello has more capacity for dynamic modulation than the piano has. I could be wrong. But I'm sure I'm right when I say that if you've read this far you'll like this recording.
I am not into classic music in general. And I never imagined that I will love Bach's music. However, I have accidentally run into this Bach's cello work over the library website and fell in love with this unaccompanied cello suites. The music is powerful and sensational and will touch your heart.
