Gunlord
4.0 out of 5 starsNot a bad novella
April 6, 2017
This is a short novella that seems similar in some ways to Ronald Malfi's "Snow," and it shares general similarities with post-apocalyptic fiction, especially ones involving, well, snow, that also revolve around a strange catastrophe befalling the world and populating it with hostile creatures.

Essentially, an American college professor and the woman he's having an affair with are holed up inside, some time after a mysterious explosion blanketed their world with snow, and also brought along strange, snow-white-skinned creatures wandering around outside, humanoid in shape but scuttling around like crabs. Were they aliens? Mutants? Something else? Our protagonists have no idea, and they don't even know if this snow has covered the whole world or just their area, but they're running out of food and they know they have to leave soon. This story covers their journey, as well as the answers to these mysteries that they manage to find!

This wasn't terrible for the price. The characters were surprisingly compelling. However, the writing never rose above competent, IMO, and there are some awkward phrases here and there. Also, the revelations at the end seemed kind of ham-handed--no spoilers, but IMO the author did a bit more telling than showing, I think he might have been better served to have the story come out through slow discoveries rather than dialogue. Anything more than that would be a spoiler, though! But I liked this, so I'll give it 4 stars--you can give it three if you're not as generous. For some reason, though, I can't find this on Amazon any more...when I left this review and clicked on the book's title, it gave me an error! Weird...

Human Shield
2.0 out of 5 starsA disappointing heap of wasted potential
November 12, 2018
Humor me: take a second and imagine a sudden unseasonal snowstorm that turns out to be infested with hostile, crab-like creatures who blend into the snow so well that often your first sign of them is a sudden loss of everything below the kneecaps. Also, they attack in groups and there are buttloads of them. The stars of this story are a ragtag band of college students and teachers that were tough/smart/lucky enough to survive the first encounter with these crab-thingies, and now they need to get to safety. Sounds interesting, right? You'd want to read that, right? Well, too bad! The 'crabs' in the actual novella are basically fast zombies with snow camo, claws, and no bite-contagion. They're called crabs because they reminded one character of a crab one time...somehow. So much wasted potential I literally can't even. On top of that, the plot is unoriginal, the characters are forgettable, and the climax has technical failures that could have been avoided with five minutes of Googling about tanks (technically, a tank doesn't even BELONG in that situation, but knowing that requires having military nerds for friends, so we'll let that one slide)

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat story with more to come!

Dominic was a professor of English at Warren College, and he was cheating on his wife, Sharon, with a grad student. His infidelity saved his life. If he hadn’t been secretly meeting Naia at his office on that May Sunday when “The Event” occurred, he probably would have gone out in the unseasonable snow like everyone else had done and been turned into one of the hairless, white, featureless creatures he and Naia had christened “the crabs” (for the way they moved.)

After weeks alone, barricaded from the "crabs" in the Warren Student Union building, Naia was ready to break out to see if the rest of the world was a winter wasteland as the radio alerts had claimed before going silent. With supplies almost gone, Dominic creates a distraction at the front of the building as Naia readies to flee out the back door to race for their lives through the snow.

The two head to the nearest outpost of civilization they know of – a strip center with shops and restaurants situated just off-campus – followed closely by hundreds of the "crabs." They have no idea what they may find – help or more of the same?

The description of the "crabs" and their amazing agility was a terrifying image. I was on the edge of my seat the entire reading. Dominic seems to be such a weak individual at first – he’s a cheater and kind of undecided about everything – but I tended to forget this and began to root for his survival and his mission to find out what happened to his wife. I recommend this to readers that like horror stories in general and post-apocalyptic tales specifically. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 starsgreat short story

I don't like when people get upset because the story is a short story. Really people, no matter where you buy the book, you are told the approximate number of pages BEFORE you buy the book. I happen to like short stories and if you downgrade a book just because it is a short story tells me you expect everyone else to prefer full novels like you. People write short stories for those of us who like them so be an adult and be aware of what you are getting prior to ordering it so you don't have to complain unnecessarily.

The story is really good. I enjoyed reading it and enjoyed the characters. I have read the second book too and liked it as well. I recommend this book.

I have to say I thought this would be just another 'zombie apocalypse' book, but no, it was more than that. The main character is flawed, having an affair with one of his college students and ends up stuck with her while worrying about his wife, trapped at the college when it starts snowing in late Spring, but the snow bringing Crabs, people who are mutated into sexless, hairless, colorless creatures that react instinctively and with a hive-like mind. The crabs are fascinating and remind me greatly of Guillermo Del Toro's 'Strain' vampires. Those creatures are fascinating and terrifying, and I couldn't help but keep turning pages until I realized I was finished and NEEDED to order the sequel, 'The Melting' of which I had already completed 65%. I can't wait to read more of this adventure!

I loved this short story. Reminded me of Stephen Kings The Mist. Chilling and scary enough without having to go into great detail. I could picture what these "things" might look like. Left me wanting more!

What caused the snow to start and the "crabs" to appear? Join Dominic and the others as they start their journey to survive.
Find out who may have created this hell on earth. Excellent start to this trilogy.

For a short story/novella, the characters' backstories get developed enough to get you connected. Sure, there is a basic similarity to King's 'The Mist', but this is different enough in both style and content to stand on its own. I plan on getting the second installment, for sure.

This is an interesting story for sure. It is short, but has all the details you need to get its point across. The author has a way of writing that is an excellent combination of horror, suspense and dystopian as we follow the survivors on their journey to find a way out of the college town wasteland.
