One Of Reba’s best

A few years back Reba put out a Christmas album that was basically just her vocal, piano and guitar. It was very simple, but it worked. After that she put out her gospel album, which again was very simple, but it worked as well. Now comes “Stronger Than The Truth” which Reba saysis the most country album she’s recorded in quite awhile. It is indeed. As with Christmas and gospel albums the production here is pretty simple, there are very few, if any, studio tricks here. It’s just Reba’s untouched vocals (little to no echo, and not a lot of background vocals) and traditional country instruments. The result is one of Reba’s best albums.
Reba’s been making albums since 1977 and has her share of hits and huge selling albums. She’s at the point that many artists of her generation are at, she’s making what she likes, knowing she’s not going to sell millions or dominate the charts. It’s just the way it goes. Because the chase for success is not there, it’s just great songs sung beautifully.

Pretty Good but Not Great!

Ms. McEntire says this is the countriest record she's ever done. Perhaps it is after 1987. But the countriest she's ever done is "My Kind of Cou try" from 1984 and "Have I got A Deal For You" in 1985. Now those WERE true traditional country. That being said, this is a good try.....not great but good. The songs are along the line of her "For My Broken Heart", except for two Western Swing tunes which are good, especially "There's No U in Oklahoma". First rate song. "Swing All Night Long With You" is also very good. "Stronger Than the Truth", the title track is great. Then we have "Storm In A Shot Glass". I do not care for this one at all. She make like Whiskey and 7 Up and it certainly shows as her voice has gotten huskier through the years probably due to her drinking so much of the stuff. Then we come to what is possibly the best song on the entire CD and one that should be released as a single: "Tammy Wynette Kind of Pain". Superior in every way. A true stand out. Another superior cut is "Cactus In A Coffee Can", a heart breaking song about woman carrying her mother's ashes in a coffee can topped with a cactus who is on an airplane and pours her heart out to McEntire, her seat mate. Outstanding! Then comes another ballad "Your Heart" which is ok but didn't blow me away. "The Clown" is a little better but not in the same league as the "Wynette" or "Cactus" songs. It reminds me of some of the ballads on her later projects of the 90s. "The Bar Is Getting Lower" is about aging and trying to find romance. That also would fit in on her 90s projects. "In His Mind" is a pretty good ballad but, again, nothing to rave about. Then comes the worst song on the entire CD..."Freedom"...over production with loud electric guitars????? This is not traditional country but more like those horrible songs she has done in the past like "Fancy", "RESPECT", "Take it Back" and "Why Haven't I Heard From You". To call this traditional country is stretching it. Then comes the sweet ballads "You Never Gave Up On Me" which would have been a superior cut if it had had better production. All in all, it's a pretty good record but it is NOT the countriest thing she's ever done, as I said before. It certainly is better than those pop projects she released after 1987 whe she recorded her last TRUE Traditional country, "The Last One to Know".
