A COMPARISON OF TWO MBE PREP BOOKS
Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021
I am an attorney. I passed the California bar on my first attempt years ago. I moved and now plan to retake the bar, including the MBE, in my new state.
Having been through the entire process once, I am now attempting to cobble together supplies for a refresher course without actually having to pay for a pricey bar prep course.
If you are looking to buy an MBE prep book, you are likely looking at the Sterling book and the Emanuel book. I have done a deep dive on both.
The Emanuel is the one you want.
LENGTH: The Emanuel is 996 page. The Sterling is 406 pages.
PRICE: As I type, the Emanuel is $49.24. The Sterling is $92.95.
CONTENT: The Emanuel covers the main topics as well as providing detailed example questions and answers throughout. The Sterling covers the main topics.
ORGANIZATION: The Emanuel is extremely well laid out and easy to follow; creating my own briefer outline while going through the Emanuel was easy and rewarding. The Sterling is, in a word, dreadful; there is no clear outline format and often material is presented in a disjointed, almost haphazard manner.
LOOK INSIDE FEATURE: You can look inside the Emanuel to get a very detailed understanding of the book. A great many pages are featured. The Sterling, by contrast, has almost no pages in the Look Inside feature. I have to think this is because the author knows that if you were easily able to compare both volumes, no one would ever buy the Sterling.
BOTTOM LINE: The Emanuel is twice as long, better organized, provides much better content, and costs half as much. I'll leave you to parse out which one is the better choice.
