Another very solid effort by one of the finest singer/songwriters the great state of Texas has ever produced. They're calling this his " country " album...celebrating the music and time of Waylon Jennings....honestly, to me, this sounds just like a Steve Earle album, tough, gritty, hard no frills rockin', just like most Steve Earle albums....so I guess what I'm trying to say is, that to my ears this sounds no more country than most of his work...the deluxe version is the one to get.....the bonus tracks are a lot of fun and the dvd is very entertaining. If you're a longtime fan, or brand new to Steve Earle....don't miss this great set....funny that he and his son have new albums out at the same time, and JTE's new one is his best one yet....like father like son...
I love Steve Earle, seen him three times at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC and would go again. This album features a tune with Willie Nelson on it. I'm not big on labels s I can't subscribe to the idea that Steve is a country musician, as this album suggests, sort of, for the theme is based on the music of Waylon Jennings but I can't equate this brand of sound with Nashville pop. It's gritty, rocking outlaw music. Steve has a son, Justin Townes Earle, middle name ...a very close friend of Steves, Townes Van Zandt. I just love Steve Earle from his first to his last recording.
Got tickets to see the Dukes next week. If they were to only play this record I'd be satisfied! Hands down this is a great album. Been waiting and boy does it deliver! Thank ya Steve Earle! Not only for the new album but also for being a voice for my generation......
I really enjoyed this record! Though I am a long time fan of Steve Earle, I haven’t loved everything he’s put out. And on first listen I wasn’t sure about this one. But I like it more and more with repeated listening. Yes, his voice has gotten pretty ragged. But get past that and there is some great music here. The heartbreak and anger over the end of his marriage is all over it in “This is How it Ends” his diet with Miranda Lambert, “You Broke My Heart,” “Fixin’ to Die” and “Lookin’ for a Woman.” His great love and admiration for Guy Clark is in “Goodbye Michaelangelo.” The angry young man from “Guitat Town” and “Copperhead Road” sounds a little rougher but he’s still here. No one crafts a song like Steve Earle, and I encourage anyone who hasn’t done so to give this record a chance.
Best Steve Earle album in several years. Great music with an outlaw edge and just the right amount of righteous anger. Steve is at his best when he is ticked off politically and personally and this is one of those times.
Steve Earle's beautiful tribute to Waylon Jennings is one of his best since the magnificent T-Bone Burnett produced "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive." The title song with Willie Nelson is an instant classic!
