5.0 out of 5 stars100% All-Stainless Steel Interior, including the Lid and Pour Spout!
December 14, 2015
I have searched far and wide over the years for the holy grail of electric kettles: a 100% all-stainless steel interior. I first began with a Hamilton Beach 40898, which I thought had a stainless steel interior except I discovered that the inside of the lid was plastic. I have researched over 3-4 dozen models and this is only one of two models that I've found that not only has stainless steel in the bottom portion which is in contact with the boiling water, but also the inside of the top lid. Practically all the electric kettles on the market claim to have a "stainless steel interior," yet neglect to mention about a plastic lid. Although that lid is not in direct contact with the boiling water, the steam that rises will condensate on the lid and then drip back down into your water. In my perspective, indirect contact is equivalent to direct contact. Although manufacturers claim that any plastic that they use is "BPA-free," they fail to mention that plastic contains other components that have even more detrimental synthetic estrogenic effects than BPA. I believe that hot steam coming into contact with the plastic everyday for years will degrade the plastic material and result in "leakage". The Secura pour spout also is all steel and has a little steel lip to prevent any water coming into contact with the plastic exterior housing.

The other model I've found that has an all-stainless steel interior is designed by Precise Heat. I prefer the Secura for these reasons:

-Double-wall construction keeps the boiled water hot longer. Also exterior is cool to the touch.
-Secura feels more robust.
-Uses British Strix control to conserve energy when reheating already hot or warm water.

It's hard for me to allocate time to write Amazon reviews, but I took the time because I love my Secura kettle so much. With the cold winter weather, I find myself using my Secura kettle 3+ times per day. My only suggestion for this item is to offer a model with all stainless exterior as well, although the black exterior is not half bad.

In kettle news, I was very excited to hear about the new OXO On Cordless Glass Electric Kettle. The see-through glass container with all stainless steel seemed to be the perfect marriage of design, function, and safety. Alas, after doing some further digging, contacting OXO, I was informed that it has silicone seals in the bottom and a plastic inner lid on top. By the way, silicone has also not been proven to be 100% safe for human consumption as some types of silicone could contain siloxane compounds that may cause adverse reproductive, neurological, and immune effects.

1.0 out of 5 starsKettle itself could become fire hazard source.

If you look on the attached photo, you will see that rust trail is well above the water level. Rust is not caused by boiling water, but coming from hole where mechanism responsible for shutting off the kettle boiling process is located. Something in the shutting off mechanism (electrical circuit) is getting very rusty and because of water vapors this rust is leaking out from the hole. I am sure if you open electrical circuit you will see a lot up rust inside. My concern that increase resistances from rust will generate excessive heat in the kettle electrical system and kettle itself could become fire hazard source.

1.0 out of 5 starsRust spots appear after just days of use
April 20, 2018
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
Perfect! Much better than my old kettle. It's not too heavy, and I like the fact that it's all stainless steel on the inside. Simple design that does exactly what you want.
Update: It's been just over a month since I bought it, and I discovered rust inside, near the top at the back of the kettle. Customer service have agreed to send me a replacement, so hopefully it won't happen again. Bumping this down to three stars for now.
Update: After a few days of use, the replacement started to rust, in the exact same spot as the previous one. Too bad - this would have been a great kettle otherwise. I've bought a Breville instead, as I had better luck with that in the past.

5.0 out of 5 starsPlastic free!
October 7, 2018
Color: Midnight BlackVerified Purchase
This water heater is the the perfect choice if your priority is to minimize plastic use. I have searched high and low, reading way too many reviews of way too many different electric water kettles. Let me summarize for you: generally the great divide in people's preferences are: 1. those who want fast heating; 2. those who want to see how much water is in the kettle; 3. those who want zero plastic touching water. If you want #1 and 3, this is the kettle for you. I'm not sure why #2 is that important, but if it irks you to not know exactly how much water is being heated, this kettle is not for you.

In spring 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a recommendation to minimize plastic use for children's food containers (baby bottle, plates, bowls), based on a study that showed that in high heat conditions such as dish washer and microwave, even BPA free plastic will release chemicals into its contents. Don't wait for scientists to prove that it's bad to use plastics when heating up things. Most of the kettles out there have some plastic component touching the water, be it the window that tell you how much water is inside, the lid, or even the filter at the spout. This is one of very few that I found to be plastic free in all parts that come in contact with the water you are drinking.

If you think I'm crazy, that's fine. My husband, who probably thinks I'm crazy in my commitment to live plastic-free, but tolerates my insanity, also likes this kettle, because it looks nice, and does a fine job heating up water, does so quickly and safety with its automatic shut off feature. So go ahead and buy this, you'll like it. Except if you just can't stand having heated slightly too much or too little water. Or you know, you could use a measuring cup to put in the exact amount of water you want. There, problem solved, and this is still the perfect kettle.

5.0 out of 5 starsSuperb, straightforward, plastic-free way to boil water!
April 12, 2017
Color: OrangeVerified Purchase
I spent nearly two months trying to find a kettle that didn't have _any_ plastic inside in contact with the water. I read many dozens of online reviews and forums, and nothing quite made the cut. I wanted a glass or ceramic interior, because they're inert and won't flavor or contaminate the water, but that proved impossible; I decided stainless steel was a good alternative. (I'd been using a Le Creuset for the past 10 years but can no longer remove the scale from the inside and needed a replacement.) This kettle works beautifully and it's completely nontoxic, as the water contacts nothing but stainless inside.

Note that some people have worried about a small circular hole at the top beneath the lid -- this is there so that the lid can close. When you're boiling water, that hole is completely blocked by the thickness of the lid as it closes; the interior of the lid is the same stainless steel as the rest of the interior. There is thus NO plastic that can be contacted by water or steam in this kettle. (See photos. The first shows the hole just beneath the rim, and the second shows that the thickness of the metal in the lid will completely block that hole.)

I've been using the kettle multiple times per day and it works simply and beautifully. It boils water quickly, and it shuts off by itself once it's reached the boil. For those of you considering a kettle with temperature settings: (1) testing of such kettles indicates that most of them are off the desired temperature by as much as 10 degrees, defeating the purpose of setting it at different temps for different teas; and (2) I have a ThermoPop thermometer (not available through amazon, alas) and another less fancy one, and both of them indicate that once you pour the water out of the kettle, the temperature drops really quickly. If I pour into an open cup, the temp falls to ~180-185 degrees as soon as I've stopped pouring; the temp remains a bit higher in a closed teapot (and will differ depending on whether the teapot is glass, ceramic, or metal). So I'm not sure that even an accurate temp gauge on a kettle would be that useful.

I liked everything about this kettle but despite careful use it stopped working less than 7 months after I purchased it. I contacted the seller as it is supposed to have a 2 year warranty but have not heard back. Disappointing to say the least.

2.0 out of 5 starsFlawed design

I have been hunting for a decent non-toxic electric kettle and unfortunately this isn't it.

I don't understand 2 critical design elements, and after only 3 days of use this is why I will be returning:
1) inside there is a ~.5-1cm hole that leads to the gap between inner and outer layers (close to the top where the lid is hinged). At first glance it doesn't seem to matter since it is above the "fill line", however, in trying to wash the kettle, water easily gets into that hole, not to mention the condensation that would accumulate in there, so I imagine after a number of uses you will end up with gross moldy water sloshing in between the inside and outside, and then at the right angles End up pouring back into the kettle water...GROSS.

2) Whenever you pop the lid open (like to refill--so at least daily) all of the condensation ends up running down the back of the kettle all over the power button and onto the base and counter. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. No wonder there are reviews of peoples button not working after awhile...Water and electricity do not mix. Not to mention the puddles all over the base and countertop, and again besides the electricity concerns, is annoying to clean up and a ridiculous design flaw I have not experienced on my other kettle.

I gave it 2 stars because it does at least boil the water decently quickly.

Still on the hunt...

We noticed brown rust on the bottom of the kettle right away, probably within the first week or so but we thought that it wasn't a big deal. Then the top and the side of the kettle became rust as well, within the next 2 months.

I would like to get a refund. This kettle cannot be stainless steel since stainless steel doesn't rust. This product is a fraud.
Please, see the pictures.

1.0 out of 5 starsWould be a great kettle if not for potential electric hazard
February 25, 2018
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
I really hate to give this electric kettle a bad rating but it has a fatal flaw---the electric cord gets too warm every time you use it. I don't want to use something that could possibly be a fire hazard. I searched extensively on Amazon for a hot water pot that did not have plastic parts or glue seams that contacted the water and was reasonably priced; this was one of a very few I found based on reviews and the description. I used it for a few days before I noticed that the cord was unusually warm after heating, especially near the plug. A few other people mentioned the same thing in their reviews so it's obviously not an isolated occurrence. If the manufacturer corrects this flaw, this would be an excellent buy.
