Kathy
5.0 out of 5 starsIt's True These Trays Are Odor Free! Worth the Cost!
January 1, 2018
LOVE this product!!!

These refills are expensive, roughly $15 a pop. With that said, we have two cats and just moved from a large home into a townhouse and I love this product. With our home, we were able to keep the litter box in our garage since we installed a kitty door but that's not possible in the townhouse. We've been using these litter tray refills for 5 weeks. We set up the ScoopFree litter box with a separately purchased scrap rug to collect any loose blue litter crystals from the litter tray. The refill trays themselves are no brainers to set up - simply lift the cat box housing (it's clean...), take the lid included with the new refill tray and use it to cover the old tray (absolutely no smell!) and then put the new tray in the same spot as the old tray and lower the housing in place. (I use heavy duty tape to tape the lid onto the old tray so that when I throw it into the garbage dumpster the litter doesn't spill all over.) One of these trays last us about 8 days (with 2 cats). They can use the box 35 times (counter on litter box) before we notice ANY odor at all. I hate litter boxes and this is a great product!!! By the way, I purchased my ScoopFree Litter Box for $200.00 at my local, large chain pet store then found it online at Amazon for under $100.00.

1.0 out of 5 starsHIGHLY TOXIC AND MY CAT CHOKED TO DEATH!
January 22, 2018
Highly toxic!!!! So my cat I guess was cleaning himself and got these caught in his throat. Well needless to say he didn’t make it. We opened up his mouth after he violently ran through the house and he fell over, his mouth was full of the crystals.

Kim M
4.0 out of 5 starsGreat Litter System, but STAY AWAY FROM THE DYE FREE CRYSTALS.
July 9, 2016
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
We have 2 cats in a small apartment. I would say 5 stars for the litter box. 5 stars for the blue litter. 2 stars for the Clear.

The litter box works perfectly. The litter box always appears clear & clean to me. My cats had no problems with it, even from the start.

However, from using it, I learned that the only way this box is cost effective is to use the perfumed/dyed crystals. Basically, this is because the system clears the litter box wonderfully, but since the litter doesn't clump, it won't clear the cat pee away, so unless you get the perfume/dyed crystals, you're going to smell the litter box very quickly.

Basically, I started with the blue crystals that came with the litter box. Everything worked great. The trap was actually full before the crystals even started to smell. I just used the litter scoop to clean it out and used the crystals for the full recommended window for 2 cats. I figured getting 1 3-pack a month would be more than enough.

However, I prefer dye free products, so when I started a monthly subscription for my refill, I chose the 3-pack in Clear. Bad decision. The apartment reeked of cat pee in less than a week, and the crystals were all already yellow/brown. I had to use febreeze in the litter room just to stretch the 3 pack over the month until my next subscription delivery (which I changed back to the blue crystals). If I were to continue to use the clear, I would need to go through at least 4 trays a month, which would be about $60 a month for litter?? No way.

To summarize, this system is awesome, especially compared to much higher costing auto-litter boxes, but in a multi-cat household, you're probably going to need the perfumed crystals to make it worth it.

4.0 out of 5 starsDye-free boxes are flimsy, but the regular boxes are great!
December 8, 2016
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
Pros and Cons listed below for the blue (non dye-free) crystals, but I also tried the dye-free option and wish it was listed as a separate product. I'd give the dye-free 1 star. Not because it's dye free, but the box that actually holds the litter is totally different. It uses velcro to secure the flap/lid to the box. This design somehow ripped off every time I went to change it out, sending litter and all the other kitten treats found in litter everywhere. The whole design just seemed flimsy. Strongly reccommend sticking with the blue version.

For the blue version,

Pros:
• Very easy to chang out. Just be sure to save the top part as it will be your lid when it's time to throw out your old trays.
• The box's plastic coating is great for completely holding in #1, #2, and anything in between.
• Crystals do an okay job at capturing and eliminating smells. Of the varieties, I does best with urine. Poo can get a bit pungent if it sits on top.
• Automatic "flushing" is amazing. Whatever the crystals can't absorb, the lid does a good job at containing smells (at least for the blue crystal version). Wish I could set the delay time though. It seems to be about 15 minutes after the cat leaves the box. Fortunately, there is a button you can push to manually flush.

Cons:
• Expensive. With 2 cats, I easily go through 1 set of 3 litter boxes per month. These are basically a $40/month subscription fee for me. I reccommend subscribing on Amazon. Every little bit of savings helps. Just keep an eye out for potential price increases.

Conclusion:
Don't buy the dye-free version until they fix the boxes. I'm all for reducing excess materials, but the construction is just flimsy. The blue crystal boxes are excellent, but a bit pricey. If you have the money and live in a smaller space, I highly reccommend these. You're senses will thank you.

4.0 out of 5 starsEach tray only lasts about 2 weeks, so 1 dollar per day for scoopfree.
July 24, 2018
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
I have been using the scoop free litter box for more than 4 years. My cat is on a wet food only diet and weighs about 16 pounds. I would say each tray would last for 14 days, max. Usually by the end of 10 days, I will smell cat urine occasionally. The tray itself is too expensive, so I would clean the tray by dumping out the litter and poop and wipe it down with detergent. Then I would fill it with either Fresh Step Crystals or Petsafe crystals that comes in a bag. That way, I can lower the cost from $15 per tray to $8. After a couple of times of re-using the tray (usually about 3 times), I would just dump the whole thing and start out a new tray. With the crystal, there is no issue of dust. However, the litter still tracks everywhere. With new litter, the tracking is not bad. But as more urine soaked in the crystal, the litter tends to stick to the cat's paw and tracks everywhere.

4.0 out of 5 starsIt's great but no way lasts what is claimed. Expensive for 8-10 days. That's more the reality.
February 18, 2018
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
I started it with my new kitten. He took to it which i was grateful. I am not willing to risk changing now - they may start to have issues with new litter, I just won't go there but... this is a very nice system. It helps a lot and I do like it. It does NOT however do anything even close to what they claim. It is better with odor as it moves it onto a closed off tray area but I still scoop it out later as it does (of course) still smell. What I don't like..... it is EXTREMELY expensive for what you get. I have never gone beyond 2 weeks and even that's a stretch - they whole thing just starts to smell again (of course ) it will. Most honestly I make it a week and some days. They claim to 3 weeks but this is ridiculous unless you don't mind the rancid smell - it does not last that long no way. So if you don't mind spending the money - the truth is you will get probably around 8-10 days.

4.0 out of 5 starsDifferent style tray, equivalent quality crystals
October 17, 2017
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
These are packaged differently than pictured and differently than the Blue flavor (not sure if this is overall new packaging that will be used ove time. Instead of being able to use the top of the box to seal up before discarding, these come with a perfectly sized garbage bag to put the used container in. I’m not sure if I like it more yet. It means if you get down to the last tray - or, for example switc back to the other style trays - you’ll be stuck without a great way to dispose of them, having to use a regular trash bag. This is probably more environmentally friendly - a bit less waste - but I’m not sure its an improvement. As for white crystals vs blue - they both seem to work fine.

NC Mom
4.0 out of 5 starsI have to say I love these trays
June 27, 2016
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
We have been using the ScoopFree Litterbox and refills for about a year and a half now. I have to say I love these trays! We only have one cat, so we really only have to change the litter every 10 to 12 days. Our cat has loved the litter from day one. We can't smell the urine until it hits about day 12 or 13 or so. And the tray keeps the "poop" neatly in the little box on the side.

The ONLY reason I can't give this 5 stars is the cost. The trays are so much more expensive than litter. However, I know we are paying for convenience of not having to scoop. I just wish they were a bit more affordable. I've seen the price fluctuate a bit here on Amazon and go down as much as $8.00 per pack of three, but that isn't very often.

So, other than the price, these litter box trays are awesome!

4.0 out of 5 starsYou own a cat?
March 20, 2019
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
You don’t want your guests knowing that you own a cat when they come in your door. And this system for me, is the only way to have a cat. Realize your cat’s diet and system will make this a better or worse system for you. For example, when we brought our little guy home this was not controlling the smell of his poo. After about a week it has it under control. I also have used this system with two cats and it was great.

I would recommend getting these trays here because they are cheaper here and I get a subscribe and save discount.

Couple notes, you will always want to have an extra one on hand in case a guest is coming over or something like that. We have a bench cover for the system so most people don’t even realize we have a cat...he’s anti-social.

4.0 out of 5 starsHow I finally got kitty to use this!
January 27, 2019
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
My kitty is 16 yrs old, and her box needs a lot more cleaning than before. I bought this to keep up w daily cleaning. At first, she looked at the box as the enemy. She wouldn't even go in the room, then she tried it out, and the automatic raking scared her so much that stopped using the box, and she started peeing on my pillow! I thought it was a sure failure. Most cats hate "new" and "change", but I knew if I could get her to use this thing - that she would have a cleaner box, and I wouldn't have as much daily maintenance. I decided to try again-with a much slower approach. I took the box away and started over 2 weeks later.

First, I put the PetSafe box in the room near her original litter box - with no litter and not plugged in. After about a week -she got use to it near her, and she was no longer scared of it.

Then, I moved it next to her original box and put her regular
clumping litter in it - still leaving it unplugged and just scooping it myself (the automatic rake can't handle clumping litter - so it's important not to let it run during this phase).

A few days of her using the PetSafe box, I started mixing Crystal's into both the new and old boxes to get her use to the new litter. At that point, I also stopped scooping the original box and only scooped the new box.

Once she stopped using the old box (about a week) - I removed it, but still kept the PetSafe box unplugged. I spent another week slowly moving her over to only crystal litter and still scooping the box myself (not using the automated raking).

Once she was using the PetSafe box regularly with only Crystal's- I started plugging it in 2x a day to manually run the rake. She would be in the room, watching it work (just like she use to watch me scoop her box). She got really use to the sounds it made, and about 2 weeks in, she no longer seemed interested in it when I ran it. Then, I plugged it in for good. She seems perfectly happy with it now. We have been using it for several months.

One other tip - I found that the crystal litter wasn't lasting very long (barely 10 days) - so I experimented with different crystal litters. Dr. Elsey's senior litter works amazing with this box. It is the same material but it is a sand instead of the little crystal rocks. I buy an 8 lb. Bag and get 4 uses out of it). The Crystals just didn't absorb as well as the sand consistency -even with daily stirring.

I hope this helps for those of you with finicky kitties. It IS possible - but it takes time. It took a little over a month to recover from the first attempt (I should have known better to try and switch her without easing her into it).

Big Weave
4.0 out of 5 starsLow Odor, Easy Care for my Cats
March 22, 2019
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
I use the blue crystal PetSafe ScoopFree trays with my self cleaning litterbox and they do work well. Odor is minimal and the action of the scooper combined with the drying effect of the crystals makes for a very unobtrusive litterbox with two cats in the house. I average replacing the trays about every 1-1/2 to 2 weeks with 2 adult cats staying inside all the time. The trays/system are slightly pricey, but given my odd hours of rotating shifts I feel it's worth it for my kitties to always have a clean tray.

The only negative is that for some odd reason the crystals do track, although not as bad as typical clumping litter. The downside though is that stepping on one of the crystals in bare feet will feel like you've stepped on an ice pick! Other than that one little glitch, good product at a mostly reasonable cost.

4.0 out of 5 starsThey work very well.
January 19, 2018
Format: Misc.Verified Purchase
These litter trays work nicely however they are expensive and I have two cats so I go through at least one in less than a week. So it would be nice if they were a little cheaper other than that they come in very handy and they are pretty easy to change out . I love my automatic kitty litter box it is one of the best gifts I've ever been given and it's much easier then scooping out the litter box every day. It's also nice to have auto ship so you have them on hand. I just wish the trays were a little cheaper, more like $10 – $15.
