5.0 out of 5 starsFaster than DRAM SSD, seriously
Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2019
Before listening to those Marketers who always talk about benchmark but never compared DRAM benchmarks to NAND's.
All the information I've read i always been wondering about these SSD things never made any sense. So I decided to do some research.
I read many articles, not from the watered-down sources.
I did the search on major search engines these are the things i considered as Primary sources: Drive manufacturer's reports, Powerpoint, discussion, and reports, sales presentations. Investor reports- about manufacturer's stocks, and future.
Therefore, I choose not to believe the misconception about DRAM cache is better than NAND cache. Only a handful of Youtube reviews, only a few people really compare it on those famous review sites. But nobody really shows the benchmark number?
I will give you some good reasons why you should spend your money on this one, for all the best bang for your bucks.
Price
There are only 6 SSD manufacturers in the world, everybody makes NAND, only 3 produce DRAM-based SSD.
1. The Investor report shows that the DRAMs don't sell as predicted. It failed to convince the investors, i guess.
2.The research from one well known University in California- conducted research on this topic. Sadly I've got only their Exec sum- it seems like "NAND is faster on a benchmark" and I don't believe that any Youtuber conduct the hard research like a University research.
3.Please remember that the price doesn't reflect the quality. Sadly, since the first economist who happened to name Hennessy, decided to ship cheap whisky that nobody in Scotland drinks to America, and rebrand it as a premium Whisky. Well he said, The Yanks would not know. The price reflects scarcity, not quality sir. That's why some old cars are expensive.
4.The investor report clearly stated that NAND is market driven, while DRAM is profit driven. Well, NAND is quite competitive. While DRAM's scarce. They clearly show that companies don't make much money compared to DRAM. They wanna sell more DRAM, but they don't have demand. How sad.
Durability
As it shows on the warranty, 70GB/D everyday for 3 years warranty. Might not be as much as DRAM's but do you really use that much? This is very durable for most of people.
However, if you believe that the NAND cache isn't good enough for your demand- I would suggest you buy dedicated Rams as cache and don't buy the cheap one like the ones on many SSD.
People on Linux been doing it for 30 years on the Server. In addition, this's the most important why NAND is better for most consumer it's simply because 'it won't screw up your data when you lost power'
My research
From what I've experienced, it is not uncommon for those 6 manufacturers to produce products for other companies.
However, as it always been like this in many chemical companies (pharmaceuticals, women cosmetics, car waxes), and many electronics.
Therefore, to protect their customers' trade secrets all their customers may have similar products specs but different in very tiny details.
Maybe in some cases, including this drive, it's almost impossible to find products specs
-Shock resistant (from non-English website- I found 1500G for 0.5 ms)
-Fail time (from 2 non-English websites)
2000000 hours"(better than most- by very interesting number, surprisingly it is doubled the number of the best selling drive on Amazon)
-Random drive speed 4KB random 32kb(80,000 IOSP - but i think this number is quite redundant and irrelevant)
From my common sense
- DRAM cache should be irrelevant on SATA SSD- The limitation of the port-restricted by SATA max speed at 600mb/s.
However, you may find the NAND cache nVIMs faster than DRAM with SATA. Therefore, they understand the whole picture for people who are not familiar with bottlenecks in the working process.
Please search for 'Utilization workflow bottleneck'. The processes use for all industries, especially for speed driven processes such as fast-food restaurants, and computers.
It will illustrate that DRAM is useless. Even if, DRAM or whatever Ram is 10 million times faster than NAND.
To give you a good picture, imagine driving on the freeway with 65Mph-speed limit- where all the cars drive at the same speed. yup like that.
- Don't just talk the talk 'Famous reviewers!'- why nobody on the internet shows the true benchmark?
- I don't think i want another conductor such as Aluminum, Stainless, or any metal- those are for appearance. Plastic is cheaper, lighter, not a conductor. Unless you are planning to swing the drive around like an idiot.
Summary
-I believe that Pioneer is the leading brand. I don't believe that hard marketing is their business philosophy.
They have always been doing like this. However, please remember that some company philosophies based on "products sexiness, design-based".
That's how they market their products. I have to admit that it really works for them.
In addition, those more expensive ones aren't really better, maybe worse I guess. Therefore, I believe that the reason Pioneer doesn't include some specs on their Manual is simply that it will interfere with the manufacturers or the clients. SO!!!
They put this SSD to IoT(internet of things) category, instead of a consumer website. They don't include some pieces of information.
They just include almost nothing, but it's very easy to find that software on the internet. In addition, I did it with windows without any additional download- it took me only 5 mins.
-At least, I have proven you 2-3 logical points why this one's better. Especially stop buying those metal-looking DRAM. Those are snake oils. A hard drive doesn't need to look cool. At least check their integrities by checking the fake review test- surprisingly some manufacturers got half fake reviews. Do you really wanna do business with them?
-Benchmarks provide you some scientific data. But it's not everything. Betamax vs VHS, Nintendo vs Playstation, HD DVD vs Blu Ray, Nokia Vs Apple, and now DRAM vs NAND?
I've not done the bench test yet. In fact, I don't want to. It supposed to get around 500s- as i have shown you that the speed's restricted by SATA port.
-NAND cache with TLC instead of calling it with a prejudice word 'DRAMless', in my opinion, it's also too good for its own good. On the other hand, many companies start selling the more inferior'QLC'. Of course, most people changed their drive before they failed.
Buy it- light(45g), less expensive, no snake oil, quicker than DRAM (backed by a University conducted report), pioneer's more honest than many manufacturers.
