5.0 out of 5 starsWireless and fast lane mode
August 7, 2018
I needed more wifi range for my house since I added ring cameras all around had problems with connectivity. At first I was thinking of wiring my house with Ethernet cables all about but looked like to much work. I saw this product on youtube and read the reviews on amazon and purchased this extender. All I can say is wow this thing is unbelievable with range. Easy to use I adjust the extenders parameters to full range and used fast lane mode from 5g to 2.4g and wow the speeds are amazing just as good as my Verizon quantum cable modem and wireless now my home has coverage everywhere and outside. No cables to worry about and not drilling holes anywhere. My ring cameras are all functioning perfectly. So far very happy with the Product

1.0 out of 5 starsDO NOT update to the latest firmware 1.0.1.78

DO NOT update to the latest firmware 1.0.1.78; it disables the extender! I was able to replicate this problem with multiple units. I have brought this up with Netgear Support. Unfortunately, Netgear is keeping this firmware up on their website, and encouraging users to update to this version. It shows lack of quality assurance and total disregard for their customers.

1.0 out of 5 stars2.4 Ghz. signal drops out every couple hours, repeatedly knocking my Ring Spotlight Camera Offline
October 19, 2018
Verified Purchase
UPDATED REVIEW: Today, my Netgear AC1900 Model EX7000 effectively died. It lights up, except for the 2.4 and 5 ghz lights, meaning neither wi-fi frequency works anymore. Can't get wi-fi on either one. It's as if this thing just slowly degraded then just died within 3 months of purchase and setup. I tried a reboot and even the recessed reset button. Nothing worked to fix this piece of junk. Hardware should still be under warranty but Netgear doesn't make it easy to exercise its warranty. Sorting through that mess right now.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I thought I was getting the right extender to complement my Netgear Nighthawk router (which has been terrific for a couple years). Unfortunately, I was wrong. I bought this Netgear AC1900 EX7000 extender specifically to run my new Ring Spotlight Cam, which I mounted outside the garage looking over the driveway since that location was just a bit out of range for my existing Nighthawk router. But when the Ring camera kept going offline every couple hours I became concerned. During a process of elimination, I moved the Netgear extender to within 15 feet of my camera to ensure a good, strong signal. But the problem continued. Soon, I figured out the AC1900 Netgear extender is the culprit, not the Ring camera itself. Ring cameras aren't compatible with the 5 ghz band so I connected it to the entender's 2.4 ghz band. For whatever reason, the extender can't seem to maintain the 2.4 ghz signal for more than a couple hours without service interruptions, which subsequently knock my Ring Spotlight Camera offline. The Extender must be rebooted to fix the problem each and every time! I spent an agonizing hour on the phone with Netgear's Indian call center. The CSR dutifully followed her script and had me change the channels on my Nighthawk router, which she assured me would translate to the entender and solve my problem. The camera reconnected immediately and I was optimistic and overjoyed! I slept the sleep of the angels that night. The next morning, the camera was offline again. Frustrating! This has happened every night since setting up the Netgear extender. To verify that the problem was definitely with the Netgear extender and not the Ring camera, I selected the 2.4 ghz. signal from the extender as the primary wi-fi signal on my iPhone. Each time the Ring camera drops offline, I check my phone and sure enough I find that it has jumped from the 2.4 ghz signal to the 5 ghz signal, indicating the 2.4 ghz signal was lost due to a service interruption and the phone had to search for and find the 5 ghz signal as a backup. I researched the problem on the web and on the Netgear forums and discovered this is a widespread problem that apparently resulted from one of Netgear's firmware updates. Netgear still hasn't come up with a patch or new firmware update to correct the problem. What good is a security camera that can't stay online? Come on, Netgear! Maintaining the wi-fi signal should be the most basic and important job of a wi-fi system. You can do better than this! Is Google Mesh in my future? It will be if Netgear can't find a solution to this problem. I wish I'd gotten around to installing my system sooner. I waited out rainy days and a busy schedule for the perfect day to set up everything and now I'm past the point where I could've returned it to Amazon. I'm disappointed, defeated and angry. I have a month remaining of free Netgear phone assistance, after which time they expect me to pay them to help me. Really? And your call center in India makes the "help" process even more difficult. I can only understand every third word the CSR speaks and she can barely understand me so it only compounds the problem making for a very frustrating customer experience. My advice to others is to find a better wi-fi solution.

1.0 out of 5 starsWorked for ONE year TO THE DAY!

Failed exactly one year after purchase! Is this one of those products with a self-destruct chip that knows when its out of warranty! ;-)
I'm pretty bummed out because most reviews point to one or another Netgear extenders as the best type to buy, currently. I don't typically return with loyal patronage to a mfr who's product lasts ONE year...I might as well have rented one for $10/mo! It doesn't work on 5G channel at all anymore and drops 2.4G every few minutes even after firmware update and completely new set up. Have everything that can reach it running straight off my TP-Link router, now

frustrating experience with the product - this is what comes to mind as I write this review. I really wanted to like this product as the reviews from most users are stellar. But for me this product has been nothing but unreliable wifi connections. I have a 2 year old D-link AC3200, and that router has been rock solid. However, my house has certain dead spots due to the location of where my router is located. Hoping to relief the Wifi dead zones, I bought this extender. I have been getting constant 'no internet connection' status on multiple devices randomly as we browse different websites and doing different activities. The extender also slows down the wifi speed of my AC3200. When I turn this device on after a power cycle, it will affect the D-Link router and causes connection problems.

Maybe there's a compatibility issue between this NETGEAR extender with D-Link AC3200, but I don't have the resource or time to experiment with a NETGEAR nighthawk router to find out. I need a product that just works without much tinkering (I have enough things to worry about in my life then to debug a network router extender problem).

Good luck with your purchase.

1.0 out of 5 starsGod help you if you ever have to change your wifi passwords
June 28, 2018

It worked great for a long time, that is, until I needed to change my wifi password on my router. The website provided @ mywifiext.net does not work so you cannot adjust the password. Finally, when I did find an online troubleshooting tip that allowed me to change the passwords on the extender to match the router, I did and it still can't connect. Calling Netgear, they told me I had to move my router and extender to different parts of the house in order to troubleshoot it; talk about a painful experience. I should not have to take the time to unhook and move stuff all around the house just because I changed my wifi passwords... that is utterly ridiculous! It still isn't working. What a terrible pain in the neck.

1.0 out of 5 starsBad support, Was corrupted USB drive files. Not buying again.

This worked ok except for the USB drive function. After a few months the drive could not be accesses. Reboot solved the problem for a short time. I then plugged the drive into my computer and discovered filesystem errors. Oh no maybe my 4 year old drive is failing. I bought a new drive. Plugged it in and next day same problem. And it corrupted files again. I had talked to support and they were useless, reset all settings... but since the problem was sporadic I had to close the case. Now the "FREE 90 Days tech support" has elapsed and I cannot open a new ticket. WHAT It does have a 1 year warranty, but I cant open a support ticket. Whoa! Netgear just lost me as a customer, next gear will not be Netgear's. Too bad since I just bought Arlo and love it.

1.0 out of 5 starswow -- how does Netgear stay in business?
March 4, 2019

I saw a lot of comments about failed installations with this router extender, but thought the positive reviews outweighed them. Boy was I wrong about that. To start with, the WPS procedure did not get the extender to work so i tried the manual approach, which was a total fiasco. The first thing you run into is that the web site that the instructions direct you to are nothing at all like the printed instructions describe. You end up in an endless loop where the extender does nothing and the installation process loops around.
I tried to find a c/s phone number for netgear, but could not find one anywhere on their site.
One reason i bought this model was because it stated that you could call amazon customer service for technical help. My one experience with that way of getting tech support had gone way better than i had expected, so i had high hopes dashed immediately when the amazon "tech" merely placed a call to netgear tech support and left the call. The netgear tech rep could not speak a work of english, so after 15 minutes of trying to provide my name and email address i gave up and submitted the paperwork to return the unit to amazon. I order a tp-link unit and have my fingers crossed that i'll get it up and running.

Purchased a wireless extender and it will not interact with our internet router. We had a professional connect the router to the extender, and certain devices still will not interact and pick up any wifi while the extender is plugged in. Called Netgear, was on hold for an hour, and the lady proceeded to try to sell us some sort of continuation of service for $200. Are you kidding me?! We have had this a little over a year and really haven't used it until now, and we get slapped in the face with a charge to use their product that we bought new. Terrible, terrible customer service with no help. They told us to go online to try to fix the problem. Never buying Netgear again, terrible customer service and bleeding consumers for every penny they're worth. Disgusted with Netgear through and through.

1.0 out of 5 starsBeginning to Think Netgear Gear is Problematic
April 28, 2019
Verified Purchase
I have used one of these Netgear Wi-Fi Extenders in my shop as a wireless bridge for years, so I was not hesitant to buy another for a client (I am a computer consultant with 17 years experience with wireless networks.)

I hooked it up, and the programming was relatively easy. I liked the fact that it functioned sort of like a mesh wireless device in that the extended networks could have the same SSID as the networks they were extending. However, after getting it all set up and then disconnecting and reconnecting the wireless devices closest to it, I discovered that the devices could not connect to the router's DHCP server, so they all ended up with useless 169.254 autoconfiguration addresses. I tried all kinds of things to remedy this including resetting the device and setting it up again from scratch, same result.

I discovered I could make the wireless devices work by assigning a static IP, subnet mask and gateway, but I never like to do this. To me, if a device can't get an address through DHCP, that is a sign that something is bad wrong - not a simple little obstacle to work around with a static IP. Also, if you assign a static IP address to a wireless adapter in a mobile device, then the next time you take it somewhere else and connect it to a different wireless network, the static address isn't going to work.

So I took the device out and replaced it with something else. Now I'm stuck - is it defective? Should I return it? Or was I doing something wrong in programming it? Lately I have had a string of inexplicable setup failures like this with Netgear devices, to the point where I am thinking of abandoning the whole brand. Especially in light of the fact that I have called their tech support before and it is by far the worst, most useless "support" on the planet - script readers in India who have no clue how networks work.

I replaced this with a little Linksys booster that plugged into the wall - not near as robust and no 5 network ports on the back, but at least it worked.

This extender is supposed to be a mesh extender but when you put two or more of them on a network they get squirrely and start to drop out the wired / wireless connections. I had one on my network to give my cabin security a strong wireless connection which worked great. Later I put a second one in my garage at the opposite side of my property to give it a strong signal for devices inside of there. I have a total of 43 devices on wireless (smarthome stuff). When I added the second one, one or the other of the extenders would start dropping the wired devices plugged into the back of the extender. About every 20 seconds it would drop and then reconnect the devices. It wasn't always the same extender. All netgear support would suggest is update the firmware. That didn't work. I sent my second one back because it was messing up both.
