4.0 out of 5 starsUNEXPECTED GIFTS
November 22, 2016
When Maggie Sheets, a struggling single mother to toddler daughter Lucy, learns that she has inherited a beach house in Sag Harbor, she is stunned. Not only because she had never expected to receive anything from her former friend Liza. She is also not sure what to think of the “catch” that comes with the legacy. The inheritance includes Liza’s aging mother Edith.

Maggie had met Liza Brenner, a bestselling author, when she had taken on the job of cleaning her penthouse. At some point, the two of them connected. But then, a misunderstanding (or a betrayal, depending on your perspective) drove a wedge between them.

Now Maggie has to decide what to do. Leave her house cleaning business in New York, for the cottage on the beach…and the elderly woman roommate. Or keep doing what she has been doing. But Edith could be a handful. She seems to be in early Alzheimer’s disease.

Alternating perspectives tell the story of Inheriting Edith: A Novel, bringing out each woman’s history. They have more in common than they initially realized, and I was delighted to discover the layers (and secrets) of these two characters. In a lovely setting, we learn more than we bargained for.

Will they find a way to coexist? Can they provide comfort and support to one another? How will one of Edith’s secrets bind them closer together? Somewhat predictable, the story also offered up glimpses into the lives they create together, and how unexpected challenges can be true gifts. I enjoyed this book, and recommend it for those who like family issues. 4 stars.

2.0 out of 5 starssometimes having a foreign accent ("ees good Mommy? ") and sometimes just throwing tantrums
June 13, 2018
Never quite takes off....even the author mentions in the reading guide that she thought Maggie was a "dud." Indeed she is; there is a complete lack of character development in both Maggie and Edith; you never really get to know their innermost thoughts as they are fleeting. Maggie's child is given random dialogue which is sometimes presented as the child having a lisp, sometimes having a foreign accent ("ees good Mommy?") and sometimes just throwing tantrums. Maggie is bequeathed Edith's home and Edith by Edith's daughter (an ex-friend )who took her own life. Edith has early onset dementia and Maggie becomes her companion. The relationship between these two is rocky on one page, good on the next. I did not empathize or sympathize with either character. Maggie goes on a couple of dates with a local toy-store owner. There is no chemistry between them that I can discern. Edith's daughter's suicide remains a mystery (at least to me; maybe I missed something.) I do not recommend this book and hope the author does better next time.

The plot is very good and the writing is okay. But many of the characters are not well developed and are very stereotypically portrayed.

I really rate this a 3 1/2 stars. The premise is very interesting.. a single mother of a toddler finds she has inherited, from a previous employer, a home on sag harbor. The caveat is that she has also inherited the deceased' s mother who is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. The novel held my interest but I did grow tired of the undisciplined child being raised by her mother, Maggie, who seems to make her life and decisions more difficult than they need to be.
