Makes a change to see a book like this set in the overlooked corner of Europe -- the Baltic States. A well-written, action-packed story. Magnusholm’s mastery of description took me to battlefields in wintry woods and freezing swamps. It transported me to futuristic nightclubs, sandy beaches and stuffy government meetings. I felt buffeted by detonations, buzzed by bullets, scorched by flames, lashed by rain and racked with cold. The fear is palpable, and so is determination of the defenders and flippant arrogance of the attackers.
Magnusholm is somewhat wordy in places, and the characters tend to pause for reflection, but the overall effect is that of an atmospheric read with tumbling, hallucinogenic prose.
