I Was An Early Adopter Of This Razor (11-14-17)
Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2017
Why did Amazon Vine offer me a new Mach3 razor when the original model came out way back in June of 1998? That doesn't make any sense since I had to delete my original review in order to replace it with this one. In any event I replaced my old Gillette Fusion (introduced in 2006) back in the fall of 2017 because my beard (Viking and Irish heritage) was getting tougher to shave as I got older. My Fusion (pictured as the one on the left) had done a satisfactory job for me at that point but it seemed that having four blades caused the head to jam up with the shaved hair.
In the picture below you will notice that both razors are almost the same exact length. The also weigh within a fraction of an ounce of each other. While the grip construction is somewhat different your actual grip on each razor feels the same. Since the new Mach3 has a straight barrel for a handle, it is probably cheaper to produce than the more shapely Fusion. Developing a better performing product at a cheaper cost avoids adding more to the retail price. Function trumps beauty in this case.
The main difference is in the blades. The Fusion has four very tightly mounted blades, looking as though each one overlaps its neighbor. That would of course add to the trapping of the shaved hair in the blades. The Mach3 now has three blades that have more space between them, allowing the shaved hairs to fall through the blades instead of gumming them up.
