Nice mystery full of editing errors.

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I liked the characters and the plot kept me guessing.
Like other reviewers, I found law enforcement sharing information so freely to be not believable.

The thing that drove me absolutely crazy was all of the glaring grammatical and punctuation errors and the misuse of some words (e.g., bare for bear.) They were so numerous and egregious that they kept jarring me out of the story. I kept having to reread sentences to discern the meaning because of the dearth of commas.
It looks to me like editing errors, so I’m not dinging the author. This book was free on Kindle, which is why I started reading this author. It’s a shame. The errors really detract from a nice little mystery book. I’m not planning to buy the next book in the series if the sample shows it shares the same editing problems.

I found this book to be amateurish and flat. In all fairness it is fiction, but in what world are law enforcement so open about the wpp? It's got some promise but gets bogged down by very one dimensional characters. There were a lot of characters central to the book and yet the reader doesn't get a feel for any of them. This is an author I wont read a second time.

Book 2 please and quick!

This was an amazing debut novel by a promising new author, and I look forward to reading more of her books especially the next book about these two sisters! The ending of this book was great on one hand but on another it makes the reader scream out loud in frustration about how it ended. Hurry up book 2!!

This book was a real attention grabber from the very first page. The plot twists keep you on your toes and has you guessing throughout the book and O’Brien’s writing style draws you in. It flows so seamlessly there is never a spot where the reader wants to stop for a break, the night or until the next chapter. I found myself racing through the novel wanting to know what would happen next and wondering how it all would end. I was torn between wanting and needing to know what was going to happen next. At times I thought it was going in one direction, and it ended up going somewhere completely different, which is a great thing in a book today. So many books have become predictable but this one was anything but.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters, especially the sisters Aurina and Ryanne. It was believable and reminded me of how sister's would talk to one another. The men in the book were described so well that I had a clear picture of them in my mind and when the author described the cities, towns and lakes I could see myself there with the characters. The picture was painted so clearly by the author that I could envision it in my mind. I really enjoyed the secrets that came out and how the author didn't throw a bunch of characters into the book who didn't need to be there. She was really amazing at the way they all blended into the story.

The author is Canadian and uses that as her setting and while that didn't bother me at all, some people may not enjoy the authentic spelling of some words, such as gunna (gonna), the police ranks are different than in the US and just minor details such as this. I enjoyed the entire story as it was a true reflection of the author and the way life is in Canada, and this made it much more fun for me as a reader.

Make sure you add this fast paced mystery to your TBR list and leave plenty of time to read it as you won't want to stop once you start. Happy Reading, or in this case Happy Mystery Solving. Enjoy ~

DARKNESS FOLLOWS IS ANOTHER GREAT MURDER MYSTERY BY THE AMAZING EMERALD O'BRIEN. THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK SHE HAS WRITTEN AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT ME ONE BIT. I WAS DRAWN INTO THE STORY FROM THE VERY FIRST PAGE UNTIL THE VERY END. WE MEET 2 SISTERS, AURINA AND RYANNE WHO ARE PUT IN WITNESS PROTECTION. AURINA GOT INVOLVED WITH THE WRONG MAN WHO TURNED OUT TO BE A MURDER. THE SISTERS ARE NOW IN DANGER AND ARE TAKEN TO A REMOTE LOCATION. AS THE CASE UNRAVELS, THE SISTERS REALIZE THEY ARE NO LONGER SAFE. WILL THE MURDERER BE CAUGHT IN TIME?

DARKNESS FOLLOWS WAS FAST READ FOR ME FILLED WITH SUSPENSE, ACTION, INTRIGUE, MURDER AND EVEN SOME ROMANCE. I LOVE ALL THESE GENRES IN ONE STORY. EMERALD'S BOOKS ALWAYS KEEP YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT. HER CHARACTERS ARE VERY COMPLEX AND SO INTERESTING AS THE SISTERS WERE IN THIS BOOK. I HAVE TO SAY, AURINA IS MY FAVORITE SISTER OUT OF THE TWO. I THOUGHT RYANNE WAS RECKLESS. I LOVED THAT THERE WAS A CHANCE OF ROMANCE FOR BOTH SISTERS. DARKNESS FOLLOWS LEAVES YOU WANTING MORE AT THE END.

IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ONE OF EMERALD'S BOOK, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU READ ONE. YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING. I LOVE HOW SHE COMBINES SEVERAL GENRES IN ONE STORY AND REALLY ENJOY HER CHARACTERS. Elements of a good Thriller.

This book was originally published on Kurt's Frontier. Note this book was the prize in a promotional giveaway. As always, this is the honest opinion of the author.

Synopsis:

Aurina and Ryanne Patrick have been caught up in a web of murder and intrigue. Aurina is brought to the police department in Toronto when her boyfriend is arrested for murder. She and her sister are put into the witness protection program because David (Aurina’s boyfriend) wasn’t working alone. More to the point, he was only an accomplice for the real serial killer. Jeremy has murdered three girls so far. The two sisters are taken to Dersten Ontario for safety. However, girls shortly start dying in Dersten. The first thing everyone thinks of is the serial killer, but there are differences. Has Jeremy found them, or is there a different, more dangerous killer stalking them?

Review:

Darkness Follows has all the elements of a good thriller: mystery, suspense, red herrings, and a plot twist. One is immediately drawn to the two sisters who are suddenly uprooted from their normal surroundings and dropped off in the middle of nowhere. The fictitious town of Dersten is also compelling for those of us attracted to small town life. Emerald O’Brien does sometimes use exposition in places where dialog would be more applicable, but not extensively, and it isn’t too distracting. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

A great debut

This story surrounds a pair of sisters, Aurina and Ryanne, who find themselves thrust into the Witness Protection program after a man Aurina is involved with is arrested as an accessory to murder. The man behind the murders is still at large, and police are concerned that the Patrick sisters could be next.

Aurina and Ryanne are whisked away to a safe house in an idyllic little town neither of them have ever heard of. Here they must hide from the world under police protection, isolated, their very lives put on hold until a psychotic killer is arrested. Each of the sisters copes with the situation differently, and their police protectors find themselves with their hands full.

Layer upon layer of suspense builds as new information about the case becomes known, along with the shocking revelation that the Patrick sisters' location may have been compromised. Add some handsome men and the potential for romance, and the result is a multi-faceted thriller that keeps the reader turning pages until the very end.

This is a great debut novel for a promising new Canadian author, and I look forward to reading more of her books.

Undeniably Addicted to Books

Hook, Line, SUNK!

Darkness Follows is one of those mystery “whodunit” tales that will literally keep you holding your breath.

This is a murder mystery surrounding Aurina and Ryanne, two sisters north of the border (and this probably made me the happiest to see. I absolutely LOVE coming across new Canadian authors.). They are placed in Witness Protection after a man Aurina was involved with was arrested for accessory to murder. And I can’t actually say much more because anything else will give away the rest of the story.

It’s a page turner, it will keep you hooked, and you will hopefully be as surprised as I was with the outcome! It was also incredibly refreshing to come across an NA book that was more mystery than sex. And now I need to go dig into book 2!

This novel is simultaneously fun and suspenseful. The plot twists keep you on your toes but O’Brien’s writing style draws you in. I found myself racing through the novel wanting to know what would happen next and how it all would end. I also really appreciate the Canadian content in the story. It’s nice to see an author writing suspense about the world north of the border. Everything combined into one quick, easy read that kept me captivated.

The characters in this novel are quite unique. They are definitely real, and down to earth yet O’Brien develops them in such a manner that you get an up close and personal look at them. I found the dialogue in this novel to be smooth and easy to follow. It flowed naturally, lending an essence of humanity to the characters.

As a whole, this was a brilliant debut novel from a Canadian author I hope to be seeing more of in the future.

I was lucky enough to meet Emerald at a local book fair and snag myself a copy of her debut title. While I'm not normally a mystery reader, this book kept me intrigued and turning the pages to find out what happens next. There are a lot of twists and turns I didn't see coming...like not at all! She did a great job luring you in and making you think one thing only to pull the rug out from under you. Super debut novel! And the last few pages left me eager to get to book #2!! OMG!!

This book sounded promising, so I picked it up. I enjoyed it fairly well and found it hard to put down.
Good buildup of suspense, believable characters and well-written for the most part. There was a hint of a possible paranormal element, which didn't materialize, but that's my fault for misinterpreting the message at the beginning of the story.
The ending fell a little flat for me. I was expecting to be shocked, and I was, but not in the jaw-dropping way. Overall, a good book, but not the type that left me going, "WOW!" for a week afterward.
