This is a wonderful movie! A true love story that is heart warming and touching. Produced by The son of Robin and Diana Cavendish. What a tribute to his incredible parents! They brought change to disabled patients living on life suppprt who spent all their lives in hospitals that were like prisons to their souls. A treat to watch. Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy are amazing! You will need tissues.

1.0 out of 5 starsBroke my heart
November 17, 2018
I wanted so much to love this movie. Maybe it's my fault for not watching the trailer when a friend recommended it as a feel good movie. The first part was absolutely stunning and inspirational, about how he and his loved ones fought for his life and freedom. But then I got confused because he was talking about dying and then about ending his own life. I just, I have trouble wrapping my head around this shift. As a personally disabled person who understands ongoing pain and suffering, the mentality of the film that choosing to end your own life, even in the midst of pain, is something to be celebrated, breaks my heart. I know it's based on a true story and I am very grateful for their family and what they did to improve the lives of the disabled, but it disappoints me that the movie stops fighting for people to live when they decide that it's okay to stop fighting. My life's not easy, but I don't want anyone thinking that their life is suddenly too burdensome or difficult to keep going. I don't want society to expect less of me. I know the movie is about so much more than the ending, but it really ruined it for me. You never know what life is left in you.

4.0 out of 5 starsA breath of fresh air
February 19, 2018
Format: Prime VideoVerified Purchase
The movie Breathe was a breath of fresh air exploring the horrors of the mysterious disease called "polio"in this inspiring drama. It stalked the world with great fury decades ago. I remember a story my father told me about a man he worked with in his office. My dad bid him good night and the very next day, when the man's desk was unattended, word quickly spread throughout the office that this poor man was suddenly stricken with polio and was already in an "iron lung". Breathe is an all too true story capturing the severity and life changing impact of this disease. The acting is flawless by both Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy as they transform from carefree young lovers to progress to committed partners both trapped as he is incapacitated. While many of the scenes are repetitive showing his condition as the years progress and as Garfield's character watches his little boy grows up, these fine actors both have a broad range of expressive facial emotions and acting. All the support actors were excellent as well. For historical reasons as well a a love story well told, I recommend this motion picture.

We LOVED this movie. It is a heart warming testament to love and facing adversity. I am so glad they showed the vulnerability of the characters, and how hard the fight was. I also love that their son was the producer of the movie. How amazing to be able to tell your parent's love story, and make sure that it is told accurately.

Inspirational. Compelling. Moving. Brilliant production. The human spirit, love, tenacity, dedication, survival and a life meaningfully and purposefully lived. Triumph mid enormous challenges. Physical limitations not constraining the mind or the heart. Friendship, decency, commitment, courage, ingenuity.

5.0 out of 5 starsJust a love story that pushed their lives to the very end
February 22, 2018

This is superb in every way! A TRUE STORY about ordinary people living extraordinary, impossible lives! The actors created real people. No special affects, No dramatic Hollywood sizzle, no KIAs. It is not a cheep paperback novel or an old rundown account as noted as a hallmark special. Just a love story that pushed their lives to the very end. Can't understand one single (1 Star) voting. This was produced by this couples Son. I think he would have known them best. What these people accomplished for the severely disabled masses was..... breathtaking! Outrageously BRAVE! Fabulous, fabulous acting. I had NO problem watching this story unfold for two hours. They embraced their situation with laughter, and friends, and adventure. I doubt many of us could have lived and accomplished so much in the short life of this incredible couple. Thanks to Johnathan, their Son, for including us in their story. Bravo Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 starsGreat dedication to family!

The "Love" the beginning of the movie expresses is beautiful and perhaps follows a cliche type of material. But later as he ended up a quadriplegic, I can't help but to admire the tremendous commitment and strength of his wife, she was/is astonishing!... His commitment to carry-on for his family and later maintain his humor is truly amazing as well. I loved the adventurous times they shared and how both committed to their son and to each other no matters the odds. Wow!

I can't say I do or don't believe in euthanizing oneself because I have not been in that predicament but it was a choice. I would like to point out the key words are "Based on a true story." A story was told and like it or not I would rather have the true story than sugar coating or changing or lying because it does not correlate with beliefs. We should not judge or blog hastily! And yes 4 stars because it did drag a little in the middle.

5.0 out of 5 starsPowerful story of humans pushing their limits
July 8, 2018
Format: Prime VideoVerified Purchase
A new favorite, similar in theme to "Me Before You"...differences in story line but both deal with the reasonable (to me) election for assisted suicide. More testament to prizing quality of life over mere existing with the aid of machines and drugs. Characters are very credible. Viewers are spared most of the intensity of caring for an individual whose existence depends completely on others: feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting. It also gives the spouse and close associates power to persuade the patient out of a depression in the initial stages of his debility where he opted for death. Lots of courage, fidelity, character, wisdom portrayed in the main character and those closest to him. Glaring limitations are exposed in the 'rules for the sake of rules' kinds of people. Commendable production. Great cinematography, too. Why do they make the music so loud when its covering scenes without dialogue?

5.0 out of 5 starsLove this movie
January 14, 2018

Love this movie. It is sad yet it shows the human spirit can be strong. It's love as it should be between man and his wife for better or worse vowels to be there with love as long as possible. This man's journey helped many get out of hospitals and enjoying what little quality time they can muster with the help of those who love them. The Will to hang in at life's worse conditions. Inspiring for some I would think.

5.0 out of 5 starsBeautifully done ...

I'm surprised I'd not heard about this movie or the story. Regardless of our judgment about assisted suicide, this was a beautiful portrayal of someone's life and how they chose to live and how to die. I have no judgment mostly because it's not my life to judge. If the idea of assisted suicide so offends you that it would ruin an entire story about a beautiful life, then look elsewhere. If you want to learn about an amazing man, his courageous wife, and a beautiful love story, you've found a treasure. I was shocked to see things were so archaic during a time in history when I was alive. What this family and his devoted friends brought to the lives of millions of people is truly a gift. If his decision, in the end, took it all away for some, to me that is the real tragedy ...

5.0 out of 5 starsNow, this is a love story

To have such loyal and joyful friends, the love of a beautiful and beyond extraordinary woman, and to watch your child grow and know that he will become a good man is to have lived life. What a joy it must have been to know such a man as Robin Cavendish. This heart wrenching but joyful tribute of Jonathan Cavendish to his parents, Robin and Diana is worth staying up til the wee hours silently laughing and hicupping through ugly tears. Cheers to Mr. Serkis for directing and Mr. Nicholson for the screenplay ( the reason as to why he agreed to be paid later is lovely). This, indeed, is a story of love, adventure and courage beyond measure.
