The Balega Ultralight are very thin and rather smaller--especially in comparison to the other models. I've bought size Large in every sock, and they vary quite a bit. If you like thin, small socks, you may like the ultralight. Or go a size big if you want them to fit more comfortably.
On the other hand, the Blister Resist were way too thick and large. They had so much excess material that they felt horrible and my feet moved around in them. They are very hot. The material on the top of the foot is actually very thin, but the bottom makes up for it. That said, They make a comfortable sock to walk around in on my wood floors in the winter. Since I won't run in them, I give them use around the house.
The Hidden Contour and Hidden Comfort are similar. The Hidden Comfort are a tad thicker. They are both a bit thicker and larger than the Soft Tread socks, but they are comfortable and nicer for winter weather, when I tend to wear them running. If I were buying more, I'd go for the Hidden Comfort. Mine have stayed superbly comfortable longer than the Hidden Contour and still feel more padded.
I like the Soft Tread best because they are thick enough to be padded and comfortable, but I have to pull them snug on my feet so there is no room for my feet to move against the sock. Also, they are not so thick that I feel my feet get hot -- and I run in 100 degree Texas summer weather. Finally, the Soft Tread are made R and L foot specific, which I've found to be helpful for fit. The Ultralights are as well, but not the other three models, if I recall correctly. Though the Hidden Comfort came with an L on each sock, that stands for "Large", not "Left". Also, the heel tabs on a lot of these sock models, including this one, are great and do a lot to make sure the sock stays in place.
Hopefully this review helps a few folks decide what Balega sock might be best for them if they're looking to purchase. If you have questions, comment and I'll try to answer them.
I wear a men's size 12 shoe. The XL size of these socks is far too small. I mean FAR too small, to the point of just being absurd. They would not even fit my wife who wears a ladies size 7. Look at the picture if you want to see what an XL looks like next to a size 12 foot.
Actually, I was able to somehow stretch this baby sock over my entire foot, so I will give it that for stretchiness. It felt like a medieval torture device, but it did stretch that much.
I have purchased a dozen pair of Balega socks and in my opinion they are the best athletic sock made. But something wasn't right about these 2 pairs. They were very thin, and the threads all started breaking loose on top of the sock after the first washing. Hmmmmm.........wondering if these were knock-offs.
These socks are not durable at all. Within three times of wearing them, a hole has opened up over the second toe. Not sure if this is a defect or a common issue with these socks. Will be looking for a refund on them.
I loved these no-show ultra light socks. I could not even feel them when I had them on they were so thin and would not budge. The new ones that I just ordered were not as stretchy, were softer and very uncomfortable in my shoe. They constantly felt like they were slipping on the heel. They did slip when going uphill. I don’t know if they were mis-packaged or simply made differently. They were not the same sock. Returned unhappily.
I had purchased a pair of Balega socks at a store right before my flight and loved them, but not the price ($20!). The one pair I have never make it from the dryer to the dresser drawer! I keep reaching for them so I figured, "Hey! I should check Amazon and see if they offer them so I can have more than 1 pair." I thought I'd try another style of Balega and bought this one. I initially liked them, but they're a little too thin for my New Balance and I tend to slide forward in my shoes, especially when I'm walking downhill! I like that they were thinner than the first pair I bought (especially for summer) but they tend to get a little too tight around the top of my foot. I wear them all day until I get home from work. When I take them off, I have a ring around my lower area on my ankle. Oh well, like the Goldilocks, I'll just have to try another pair until I find one that's just right! I do think these are the best athletic socks though, and now I'm spoiled, can't go pack to buying my socks at Costco! :)
The first time I tried on these socks, the seams were almost splitting, and one seam even ripped. I hadn't run in these, hadn't even put shoes on, and the socks started to fall apart (see photo). I wear a size 5.5 W, narrow foot, so I'm confident that I did not order the wrong size. I ordered these socks because of the reviews - I wanted to love them. So disappointed in Balega.
I like these socks but they are expensive. I also feel like I sweat more in them and my shoes feel more damp than other socks. I generally have pretty sweaty stinky feet so that may be why. I'm a women's 6.5 for regular shoes but I wear 7.5 for running shoes and these fit perfectly.
These seem like copies of Balega and not a true sock produced by them. All the other socks I have from them are so much thicker and longer. When I got these I thought they were for kids not myself. Im using them nonetheless but I'm wondering if its a real sock made by them.
