I really do love this exercise DVD. I am a sad case, 66, back fused T10-S1, and very major surgery on my toes, neuropathy in my feet and torn shoulders. Recovery has really compromised my strength and balance. The reviews encouraged me to give this a try and I actually look forward to it. I have had it now a few weeks and I actually WANT to do it 5-6 days a week! It has an introduction to become familiar with the program, and then it is broken into many 12-31 minute workouts. There is a Tai Chi section and a Yoga section that I haven't even looked at yet! So far I vary my routine among the first five workouts, often doing two in one day. They are well narrated so that they are easy to follow. Jane is just doing the routines and the narration is added in so she isn't speaking while doing the exercises. I don't have to listen to the instructional part now, since I know how to do each movement, but I still have the sound on low. There are lots more routines for me to add in as I progress. I am having to do very minor adaptation because of my limitations, mainly in my foot and ankle, but my limitations are improving already!! I often looked like a drunk, walking along stumbling a bit. From the foot surgery my right foot and leg were quite unstable and weak. I had no confidence in my steps and my ankles shook a bit. Forget about balancing on one foot or the other or getting up and down gracefully from a lower seated position. I see such improvement already. I can stand and balance on one foot to put on pants :), I sat down on a second step to visit with someone and didn't have to get hauled up :), and I feel so much more confident as I walk. I don't have to hang on to bannisters and I'm beginning to be able to pick my way through things like uneven surfaces or stairs out in the open. I am a gardener and I also enjoy mild to moderate hiking so we will see how I am this summer. What I am relating here might make this sound like it is just for basket cases. I really don't think so. I am having a hard time categorizing myself as a senior, but I have definitely earned the physically challenged status. I really wish I'd made the effort to find this a few years back, right after the foot surgery, because I probably would have recovered so much stronger. I can see that this routine would be helpful for anyone just naturally loosing their strength and balance as well as physically impaired folks or seniors just experiencing the natural aging process. My advise TRY IT!!!
My pain management doctor recommended Tai Chi for me as a core strengthening exercise. I have fibromyalgia, pelvic floor dysfunction and disk degeneration. I have found this easy to use, well paced, easy to follow instruction. I have only had is for a week and I have fully enjoyed using it so far. It also has easy yoga for anyone. Some of the yoga you use a chair so it is very user friendly. I highly recommend it!
Recovering from breaking my knee/leg my balance is terrible. I didn't know that if a person doesn't walk for 5 months they have to learn how again. I love this DVD. She says what you need to know and nothing more so it doesn't drive you crazy to listen to daily. I am doing 2 of the selections every day (about 30 min.) with a one day break every 4 days. For some strange reason I look forward to this! Some of the balance exercises I am terrible at and glad I can do this in the privacy of my home where no one can watch. This is the answer to what do you do after physical therapy. It's working!
This is an excellent tape. I am a very active 80 year old whose balance is declining. I already see improvement after only a few lessons and expect the improvement to continue. I was amazed how weak I found myself to be as I have exercised religiously since I was 20. I am an RN and realized immediately that Janes focus on the different muscle groups is exceptional. I would highly recommend this tape to anyone seeking strength to balance. Camille Luppino
Over the past few years I've purchased a number of videos for seniors. This is by far my favorite.I love the way it's broken up into various workouts. Every day is a different challenge, from stretching to Tai Chi. No way to get bored with this DVD. Routines vary from easy to difficult for me, having balance issues due to old injuries. This is my go to program!
I'm getting back into working out and starting to run, but I have needed something to help with my balance and ankle strength. My large muscle groups need work but so do the individual areas that are tough to isolate. This video is the best, whether you're like me or you need something slower and no-impact for recovery days. There's lots of stretching, lots of working isolated muscles (tops of feet, waist, fronts of thighs, to name just a few). It's slow enough that I'm not rushing to keep up with Jane, and there's plenty of time to transition from one exercise to another. It's peaceful and a joy to do. Don't get me wrong, it's not easy. You think it's easy when you're just starting out, but it won't be long until something's burning and you long for a break. The scenery is beautiful yet not distracting, the voice over is soothing, and the entire experience is like meditation for your body. I had started feeling clumsy and unbalanced, and this video is helping me feel more in control of my body and more stable when walking and moving around. I haven't even gotten to the hour of Tai Chi at the end of the DVD!
I am extremely happy with my purchase. I am a 70 year old with severe Osteoporosis. I am tying to avoid the harmful Osteoporosis drugs by going natural with natural calcium from foods and some calcium citrate supplements, also Vitamin D3. The reason that I enjoy this tape the most is that it has given me more confidence through the balance and strength portion of the DVD. I believe if I use this method it will help me prevent a fall. The second reason I enjoy the DVD is that I am now doing the Tai Chi that is on the last portion of the DVD. It is very relaxing. I have never tried Tai Chi before. Lastly I enjoy Jane's calm instruction voice and the scenery. I am probably the only one that must share the exercise space with my cat. Every time I put in the DVD she comes into the room and relaxes in front of the TV. I guess Jane's voice is pleasing to her also. Super Great DVD.
I'm so pleased with this purchase, I've waited a month before rating it because I wanted to try it multiple times. The reason I purchased it was to work on improving my balance and I definitely have seen an improvement. it's much different from my other DVD's that I exercise with, I live in an area that's rural and doesn't have sidewalks and with uneven roads I exercise at home. At 65 and with bad joint damage due to osteoarthritis it necessary to keep myself strong and I try to get 5-7 days a week of exercise in most weeks. I really like how Jane has the segments broken up so I can move around and she has a very relaxing voice and a beautiful outdoors setting. Thumbs up Jane!
A terrific beginning video! I had no idea (well, would blame it on other things) how non-existent my balance was and muscles being in such a weakened shape! Jane will say to 'hold the chair gently if you feel safer' and here I am holding on for dear life. My doctor was happy to know I had found this and enjoyed using it. It's my winter project and my aim is to be able to go out in the mountains hiking next summer with my husband. I haven't been able to do that for a number of years.
